Course Description

This course introduces students to the foundational principles and functioning of the Indian Constitution. It covers the significance of the Constitution in a democratic society, including fundamental rights and duties, federal structure, and emergency provisions. The course also emphasizes the electoral process, the roles and responsibilities of various government bodies, and the framework of state and local governance. Additionally, it explores the concept of human rights, the role of human rights institutions, and the challenges associated with their enforcement in India. The course aims to build civic awareness, encourage constitutional values, and instill respect for democratic institutions among students from diverse backgrounds.

Course Outcomes

  1. Understand and infer the significance of the Constitution of India in shaping a democratic and just society, and explain its relevance to citizens across all sectors.

  2. Outline the fundamental rights and duties enshrined in the Constitution and explain their scope, limitations, and importance in safeguarding individual liberty and national integrity.

  3. Relate the structure, powers, and functioning of the Union, State, and Local Governments in India's federal system.

  4. Explain key constitutional provisions such as the Emergency provisions, amendment procedures, and the role of the Election Commission in conducting free and fair elections.

  5. Discuss the role of human rights institutions like the NHRC and other national and international bodies in protecting human dignity, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women, children, tribals, and prisoners.

  6. Critically analyze the relationship between fundamental freedoms and human rights, and the practical challenges faced by legal experts, media, and NGOs in the promotion and enforcement of human rights in India.
